According to Chinese mythology, Jade Emperor needed help making a potion of immortality. He pretended to be a starving old man begging food from a rabbit. As the rabbit could not gather any food for the beggar, he offered himself up as food. Deeply moved by the rabbit’s selflessness, the old man revealed himself as the ruler of Gods and saved the rabbit from being sacrificed. Afterwards, the rabbit was asked to make the immortality potions and live on the moon with the Goddess Chang’e.
